ARTIST STATEMENT
I rarely know what a sculpture will become when I begin. I start with either a piece of wood or a coil of clay. While I usually have a vague idea in mind, I don't work toward a fixed design. Instead, I pay close attention to the inherent qualities of the material—its grain, weight, texture, and imperfections—and let those help shape the work. I carve, build, remove, and refine until the form begins to reveal itself and what feels most compelling. Each decision comes from looking closely and responding to what is there. An unexpected crack, a subtle shift in the surface, or the movement of the clay can become a collaborator in the making as the work as it unfolds. By responding to what is present rather than imposing a final image, I seek forms that feel both inevitable and unexpected. Some clay sculptures remain ceramic; others are transformed into bronze through the lost-wax casting process. However they are finished, my work grows from a fascination with the natural world and the balance of refinement and rawness shaped by time, erosion, and growth.
