Kendall Conrad is a sculptor working in wood, clay, and bronze. She lives and works in Santa Barbara, California.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Kendall Conrad’s sculptures emerge through a direct and intuitive engagement with material. Working in the tradition of taille directe, she carves wood without a predetermined model, responding to its grain, fissures, weight, and inherited contours. Her clay sculptures develop through a similarly immediate process, built by hand in an exchange between intention and material. As she carves, builds, removes, and refines, unexpected cracks, subtle shifts in surface, and the movement of the clay become active participants in the work. Rather than imposing a final image, Conrad allows each form to reveal itself—seeking an outcome that feels both inevitable and unexpected.
Some clay sculptures remain ceramic, while others are transformed into bronze through the lost-wax casting process. Across these materials, Conrad’s work grows from a fascination with the natural world and the tension between refinement and rawness—evoking forms shaped by growth, time, and erosion.
